Life is better with more chandeliers

We ordered this one from West Elm. The old hanging lamp was ugly - it was dark, old (but not in any sort of antique, artistic way), and it hummed a little when it was on.

But now, you can enjoy a grand entrance with our fancy-ass chandelier in the front hallway. Plus, we installed a dimmer for it. I'm a firm believer in dimmers. If given the opportunity, always, put in a dimmer! It's the only way to increase the fanciness of chandelier living (to see what I mean, watch the video).

Installation was interesting. We had some outside help, but none of us are electricians. Which should be fine with a standard installation. But the existing fixture had more than the usual number of connections: 2 grounding wires, 3 white, and 1 black. We sorted it out with a voltage tester, but it was a mind-melting challenge. So far, it's been worth it!

  1. Fancy! I love chandeliers. There was one spot in our old house that we wanted to get a chandelier that was just right. We probably shopped around for 3 months before we finally found the right one.

I really like yours. It the perfect shape for the space and just the right amount of elegance. I don't think a chandelier with the more traditional crystal pieces would have looked as good.

    1. I agree. A more traditional chandelier would have been a bit formal for that hallway. Plus this one is fancy-ass. Hooray for West Elm!

  3. Hey Julie! My husband majored in something like electrical engineering at his magnet high school in Portland and knows all about that stuff. He installs new lights for me with no problem, if you need help with any others. He can also rewire crap, fix a digital camera, and has a Doctorate of Physical Therapy...one call does it all!

    1. Just let me know via Facebook when you need help and we'll coordinate! He works a lot and his clinic is in McK so weekends work best.

  4. Well, I loved dancing under your chandelier at the Christmas party! I think that is the ultimate test of a contemporary, swanky chandelier..... Does it inspire feverish group dancing after midnight, or does it instead make one feel like sitting underneath it at a long table sipping tea and discussing when the next game of croquet should be planned with the groundskeeper.

    1. Both dancing and tea-sipping, not in that order!
